Hello Parents! Today we had a fire drill. While discussing the procedure, some students had questions like, what if I have an expensive watch, can I get it out of my backpack? Or, what if I have a pet, can I get my pet? I explained to the students that if there is a fire no one should stop to get anything, including property or animals. This seemed to bother some students, I think because the thought of leaving a pet behind is sad, but I wanted to urge you, as parents, to discuss what to do in case of fire with your children. As far as school is concerned, we just leave the building, and we don't stop to get any property or pets.
I had the students put a Chapter 1 Math Vocabulary sheet in their homework folder. They should leave this there to study while we are studying Chapter 1. It might be fun to quiz them on the definitions! Thank you for sharing your children with me. We are having a great time and I have seen so much growth already! Have a great evening! Today in class we reviewed our class website! Homework for tonight is for the students to review the website with their parents and discuss it with them, and for the students to explain the meaning behind the song, "Blackbird". They should also discuss with parents the importance of checking the website!
Thank you for being patient with me as I continue to improve the class website. Please check the calendar tab for daily events and... HOMEWORK! I can't promise I will be able to write the homework assignments every day, but I can promise I will try! Student planners should at least match what I write for homework on the website calendar. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and have a great day!
Hello Friends! I think it is a great idea for the students to have snacks in class, so here is some helpful information! First, 4 hours of school goes by before we have lunch! That's just WAY too long for students to go without nourishment, so please DO send snacks. For beverages, the only item allowed is water. For food, only HEALTHY snacks. Sugar is not our friend! If you have any questions or concerns, please call or email me!
Please be sure that your students are getting at least 30 minutes of reading time at least 5 days a week. We won't always write this in our planner, and I don't send home a reading calendar for signature, but it is ALWAYS a requirement, and I do surprise morning self starts where they have to write about what they are reading. Please help your students be successful, and prepared, by ensuring they fulfill the reading requirement. Go Olympians! What a great Monday we have had! Today, we had a guest speaker come to visit and teach us about the Civil Rights Movement. He did a great job and the students were so interested in what he had to say! There were many questions from the students about the recent events in Charlottesville, and I wanted to let you know this is a great opportunity to discuss Civil Rights with your kids! It ties in perfectly with our Social Studies core this year.
Thank you parents for signing the planners Monday through Friday each week. I will do my part to keep the communication open by guiding the students to write down their homework, upcoming events, and even messages to you. Please, let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the planner procedure. Today we sent home several papers for parents and students. The folder that the papers are in is the Oakridge Olympians folder, and I would like the students to use this folder for their homework all year. The papers on the left side are for your perusal, please keep them at home. The papers on right side need to be filled out and returned to school, preferably tomorrow.
We are having a great time in class. Homework for tonight included a discussion with parents about the book study we are doing in class, Tuck Everlasting. Parents, don't forget to sign those Olympian Planners! What an amazing first day! We were able to learn about the eclipse, then go outside to view it. I must say, 91% never seemed so impressive! We also ate lunch outside then did a read along outside with Tuck Everlasting. It was a great day and the students really seem to be loving the book. We are already on Chapter 6!
We saw a very interesting, small orange spider during our outdoor adventure today. The homework assignment for tonight is with a parent, do some investigative research online and try to find evidence that tells us what kind of spider we saw. I look forward to hearing what everyone found out in the morning! Have a great evening and Merry Eclipsmas! I'm looking for a few good parents to help me build an economic system for our classroom this year! The VERY SHORT of it is that students will have "jobs", they will get "paid", they will need to keep a checking and savings account "ledger", come up with a budget, buy "supplies", etc... I hope you get the idea. It's a big undertaking to implement and we will be working side by side to get it up and going, but I PROMISE, it will be worth it!!! Please email me if you are interested in participating in this exciting adventure and I look forward to working with you!
Lysol Wipes are our friend! We clean our desks several times a week and do a 'deep-dive' clean every couple of weeks in our classroom. We also LOVE Boxtops! Last year's class won TWO Rootbeer Float parties 🎉 for bringing the most Boxtops!
